Japan emergency project: Solar hearing aids for tsunami victims - Phase 4 (緊急津波被害者支援プロジェクト第4弾))

3月11日の東北関東大地震により、多くの被災者が出ております。特に聴覚障害者の方々は、補聴器が無くなったり、水につかって壊れたりした結果、避難生活が非常に困難になっています。この状況を鑑み、東日本大震災聴覚障害者救援宮城本部の要請を受け、聴覚障害を持った地震被害者の方々を対象に、太陽光で充電できる補聴器(ソーラー・イヤー)を100個(50人分)配給します。このプロジェクトはウインローダー様のご協力を受け、さらに、日本元気塾グローバル・アジェンダ・ゼミナールの有志メンバーが賛同し、力をあわせて寄付を集めます。

Problem

津波の被害により補聴器を失った聴覚障害者の方が多くおり、日々の避難生活に支障をきたしています。

The devastating earthquake and tsunami have paralyzed Japan's northern area. People affected by the disaster are without power or light. Many hearing impaired individuals in the area have lost their hearing aids in the earthquake and tsunami.

太陽光で再充電が可能な補聴器セットを被災地の聴覚障害者の方々に対して配給します

The hearing aids, rechargeable batteries and solar-powered chargers will be distributed to hearing impaired individuals who lost their hearing aids in the natural disaster.

On 11 March 2011, Japan was struck by the most powerful earthquake and tsunami, leaving massive impact and thousands of people remain homeless without proper access to energy and lighting. This emergency project provides solar powered lanterns to the most severely affected areas.

Problem

The devastating earthquake and tsunami have paralyzed Japan's northern area. Survivors evacuated to temporary shelters, but lack of electricity is leaving the victims vulnerable. The project addresses urgent need of providing light to the affected areas.

The Firefly Mobile Lamp is a LED lamp that can be charged with the sun via a solar panel and also charges your mobile phone. The improved Gen 2.5 Firefly desk lamp will provide hours of brightness with 10 SMD LEDs and three settings – high, medium, and a low night light. At 55 lumens, Gen 2.5 is brighter than previous desk lamps.

Barefoot Power is the winner of the 2010 World Bank Group Lighting Africa Award for best room lighting, top performance and best value categories for their PowaPack and Firefly range of solar lighting products.

Description

The Firefly Mobile Lamp is a LED lamp that can be charged with the sun via a solar panel and also charges your mobile phone. LEDs enable the development of lighting products suitable for use in developing countries at very low cost. Most poor households are burning between US$0.50 – US$2.00 each week on kerosene. Our careful pro-poor design has resulted in LED products that will payback within 6 months (some within 2 months!)

On top of replacing the dim light and noxious fumes of a kerosene lantern, another benefit of using a solar light is that it eliminates the burden of buying kerosene each week.. We have seen that families in rural western Kenya, while rarely making more than a couple thousand Kenyan shillings (KSH) per week, spend anything between 200 KSH to 1000 KSH (US$2.40 to US$11.90) per week on kerosene (or paraffin, as it is called Kenya) .

Last December, I wrote about starting a new project in Lakwati village on Alor Island, Indonesia. Working with Topa Haliel Savings and Loans Group, we introduced various solar lights, fuel-efficient cookstoves, and water filters and purifiers to get feedback, find out how much people were willing to pay for them, and work out the most effective ways of getting these technologies into the hands of the people who need them. I am very happy to update you on the progress of this project.

At least 1.3 billion people rely solely on dangerous and dirty kerosene lanterns for light, according to World Energy Outlook 2011 estimates. When the number of people with unreliable access to electricity is factored in, d.light calculates up to to 3 billion people around the world use kerosene for lighting. Any way you cut it, a frightening number of people still rely on this 19th century technology.
